The Dos and Donts of Social Media During A Divorce

Going through a divorce is never easy and often causes tremendous amounts of mental and emotional stress. With the advent of social media, it is important to understand the dos and don'ts of posting to your public page while in the midst of filing for divorce or awaiting future judgments. 

Think Before You Post

While there are plenty of posts you should avoid on social media while going through a divorce, it should not stop you from sharing your thoughts, opinions, and ideas with friends otherwise. Before updating, think about who will see your posts and avoid getting too personal or sharing legal information that can be used against you in the future in a court of law.

Avoid Boasting

Avoid boasting, bragging, or showing off expensive trips, purchases, or investments while going through a divorce, especially if you are trying to protect your own financial assets. Divorces can quickly turn ugly when an ex-spouse feels hurt and betrayed while you are off enjoying yourself and having the time of your life.

Do Not Post Negative Personal Updates

Keep your personal thoughts regarding your divorce off of social media altogether. Do not post negative updates, thoughts, or insults on social media as these may be used against you once you are in front of a judge. 

Don't Rely on Your Privacy Settings

Social media allows you to set some serious privacy settings for accounts today. However, this does not prevent a judge from creating an order to review your social media if it is reported that you have harassed, bragged, or lied on your pages by your ex-spouse. Divorces can quickly turn ugly with family and friends who have been in both yours and your ex-spouse's lives, so it is difficult to determine who is likely to share even your private posts with your ex.

Knowing how to protect yourself online during a divorce is imperative to avoid potential penalties or changes in your divorce judgments, especially if you share assets or children with your soon-to-be ex-spouse.
